Chesapeake Chase Day 17: Albemarle Sound, Pasquotank River to Dismal Swamp
A rough traverse of Albemarle Sound leads us to a sweet ride on the Pasquotank River, then up the Dismal Swamp Canal and a stop at the visitor center.
The voyages of the Motor Vessel Betty Lou
A rough traverse of Albemarle Sound leads us to a sweet ride on the Pasquotank River, then up the Dismal Swamp Canal and a stop at the visitor center.
We journey up the Pungo River-Alligator River canal, through the Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, and standby to assist a kayaker in distress.
A brisk chop at the end of the Neuse River tests our leak detection skills, but the ride up the Goose Creek canal was beautiful and calm. Boat yoga after dinner.
We visit New Bern. The town is full of history and had the best ice cream of the trip (so far), but the convenience store marina was not what we expected.
We head for an anchorage at the north end of the Adams Creek Canal. We find both quiet and congested. And a beautiful sunset.
We continue chasing north to the Chesapeake, with three less crew. Bridges add interest–and delay. But the scenery makes it all worthwhile.
We moved Betty Lou from our mooring to the Federal Point Yacht Club marina to enjoy the pool, great showers, shore power and land access; and thruster repair.
Today was an easy travel day to a mooring at Carolina Beach. We launched the dinghy to get to the beach and enjoyed the peace of hanging on a mooring.
We find refuge in Southport, Safe Harbor, to lick our wounds after a rough crossing. Cleanup and troubleshooting, phone calls, shopping, pizza and–ice cream.
An early start leads to a long, rough day offshore. With windblown spray, sea-sick crew and high temps, the bow thruster failure was still the big surprise.
